Artist Statement for "On Looking":
It's important to grieve as a passage between yesterday and tomorrow. In this work I am mourning a loss via growth and transformation; I am revealing my secrets and the saga of a relationship.By using a camera as a surrogate for the person I have lost I am simply replacing the lover's looking with the camera's lens. The camera becomes the lost illicit lover, a lover that was never really mine to have.I am reenacting the closeness I once felt in this particular secret relationship, where sexual obsession, desire and intimacy were cathartic. In many ways I have made work that epitomizes the vulnerability I would choose to avoid sharing in my daily life.To trust that people will love me if I am exactly who I am is frightening.
I do not want to be that vulnerable.
